i chose this photo for the contense page, as its a photo of the band GFB at a concert, there holding a guitar and a microphone. This photo fits in well with one of the features in the magazine that gives a review of there concert and new ablum. The fact that the instriment is in the photo gives a indication of the style of the music they do.
i chose this photo for the main full page image of the double page spread. i think this is effective there as the title of the interview is 'Breaking Though' the position of there arms and hands looks like there reaching out and breaking though, this fits in well with the overall theme of the double page spread. The photo also clearly shows the two band members faces, this will appeal to the fans of the fridays as you get a good look at there make up.

i have chosen this photo for the contense page as i think its a nice clear fresh looking photo of one of the band members in The fridays, you can see her long hair and its quite a girly photo, this will appeal to the younger audience who like the pop music culture. This photo also goes well with the overall house style of the maagzine as the tone and background colours are the same as the other Fridays photos.
ive chosen this photo for the front cover as i think its good becuase its got both girls in it and there both looking happy so i think it would be suitable for the front cover. The photo is portrait and fills the whole front cover with the photo, there is also space for the text boxes and pugs to go around the photo without taking up too much of the photograph.
im going to use this image on the double page spread, i think is effective as the hands are in focus and there faces are blured. i like the effect of this photo so i will use this in the double page spread as the main image. im not going to use this for the front cover but i didnt think it would be suitable as parts of it are out of focus and it wont look good close up

i have now put all the text in the three collums, the interview is split up clearly with the interviewers text in bold black italics font and the Fridays reply in a plain font. This makes it very easy for the reader to read what the fridays are saying, and what the interviewer is saying.

i have now added the main fridays title, this is large and shows the reader this is The fridays interview that was mentioned on the front cover. The fridays is in the same font as the main title, and is in blue. The title on the front cover was also in blue this adds to the overall house style of the magazine. The text also has a Shadow and a glow just like the main title does. This shows the reader that the main colour associated with the fridays is blue.

I have now added the main image of the Fridays that takes up the whole page on the left side, this photo is very colourfull and adds to the colourful appearance of the whole magazine. i have also added the first collom of text underneath the drop cap, this shows where the other two colloms will be. the text used in the interview is a plain arial font, this font is easy to read and clear to the reader.

This is a image of the start of my contents page, the image hasn't been inserted i have changed the background to the same gradient blue and white background as the contents page, this helps show house style. i have added where i want the text to start by putting in a drop cap, the drop cap is blue, this matches the blue colour of the title featured in the magazine about the fridays. The logo along the top of the page says 'Fresh! exclusively speaks to the fridays' this introduces the band to the reader, the text is in the same colour as the main title and the Orange text this adds to the continuity of the magazine. I have also put a quote from the interview of the Fridays on the opposite page where the image will go, this will go over the top of the photo and will show they have said it.
Contents page

i added the second photo to the contents page to fill up the space where there was one large image before, this is a image of one of the members of the fridays. there are no other photos where there is only one of the fridays featured in it, this helps focus on that particular person and would appeal to fans of the fridays. This image also makes the contents page look much brigthter and more interesting than it looked before.

Idea 1)
This is my first idea for a contence page there is both large space for the list of page numbers and other features in the magazine, this will enable the reader to easily identify the page numbers. There is also a large space for image(s) that relate to the page numbers. The main title will go across the top in a plain strip so its easily identified. the large photos would be effective as it will draw the reader to that perticular page.
Idea 2)
The second idea for the contence page has the same strip along the top for the main title of the magazine and the title 'Contence'. on this one there is two lare boxes that can be filled with images that will relate to the page numbers. the box for the list of the page numbers is smaller, this could be a good idea but it may be difficult to read as its more squashed together
Idea 3)
On this idea the main title box is much bigger, on this layout i could have the main title of the magazine aswell as a large colourfull bold title that says 'contence' the colours would be in keeping with the colours on the font colour showing a overall house style of the magazine. There are two large strips next to eachother where the page numbers will go, this shows clear spaced out page numbers and a little description about whats on that page. At the bottom of the page is room for up to three images that will relate to the page numbers featured.
Idea 4)
i have chosen to use this layout as i think this is the most effective, there is lots of large space for colourfull photos that relate to the page numbers. This will work best as the images will be in line with the page numbers making the page more effective. one half of the page will be split into the lists of page numbers and the other dedecated to photos. the main title stays at the top as i think readers will expect to see the title there and it will be confusing if the title isnt where they would expect it to be.

Layout 1
This is one possible layout of the front cover i feel this layout works as its a classic magazine layout. the big title at the top with the strips on the bottom and on the size, with a pug with additional infomration in it, this is a clear consise layout that is easy to read and register what is in the magazine. The large green box on the far left will have lists of other bands featured in the magazine and will help perswade the potential customer to buy the magazine. The strip along the bottom will have large text with information about the main doubble page spread.
Layout 2
This is another possible layout for my front cover, theres lots of large boxes and room for additional information about other features and artists featured in the magazine. The green boxes will have no background to them so it doesnt cover up a large part of the photo. This layout would be good for a magazine with lots of features that need to be mentioned on the front cover. the large pug will have quotes from the interview featured in the double page spread.
Layout 3
This is another idea for a possible layout. The large text box at the bottom of the page will have lists of other bands in it that will perswade the potential reader to buy it as it will show other features of the magazine if your not a fan of the main feature. i kept the pug in as i think its a good way of showing extra information away from the main text box. i also kept the title in the same page as i think most people would want expect to see the logo there.
Layout 4
This is another idea for a possible front cover layout, the two green text boxes would have no backgorund to them and the fonts and colours would merge in with the background image. i think this is a good way of boldy showing additional information about whats inside the magazine. There is a small strip along the top of the page that could show a quote from the featured interview or a special offer that will perswade the potential customer to buy the magazine even more.

I asked my class what they prefered out of my logo and my tag line. They said they liked all of them but they thought i should tone down the colours in the logo and make them more pastily soft colour rather than a bright neon colour as its abit over powering and looks tacky. im going to take this into concideration and tone it down, im still going to keep the orange and pink but im going to reduce the glow. When i asked the class about the tag line they prefered the light orange colour as they said it represented orange juice and that is often asociated to be fresh. After taking this into acount came up with this logo instead.
Thursday, 10 February 2011
Idea 1)
i wanted to keep the bright pink and orange colour scheme in the Tag lineaswell to create a house style for the overall magazine, the shaddow gives the title some depth and the font if much smaller and diffrent to the main title, But i felt it was too much and merged with the main title too much and decided a completely diffrent colour would be more suited.
Idea 2)
As the pink was too much colour and looked too similar to the main title i decided to focus on the orange, the colour would stand out against the pink blur of the title and is in keeping with the colour scheme. The font is rounded and smooth giving it a pop casual look. without the shaddow the font looks more flat and cartoon like. I decided against using this as the font looks childish and the colour doesnt work well with the main title.
Idea 3)
As i thought the other ideas didnt stand out enough agaisnt the bold glow of the main title i decided to give the sub title its own glow so it can stand on its own and isnt overtaken by the main title, i used the soft curved font with a thick bright pink glow. This was a good idea until i put it next to the main title and the two titles together were to overpowering.
idea 4)
Using the same colour scheme as the main title didnt work and they looked too similar so i thought back to when i was thinking of the main colour scheme and bight green came up alot as 'fresh' is often asociated with bright cool greens. Making the colour completely diffrent to the main title worked better as the subtitle wasnt drowned out by the main title and it made it clearer to read. I kept the curved font as i thought it had a easy to read fun look to it. I have chosen this as the subtitle for the final magazine.
With the subtitle and the main title together this is how it will look on the front page of my finished magazine.

Idea 4)
Taking all previous attempts into concideration i decided that pink and orange are both very bright fresh and vibrant colours that would go well with the name and they look good together. I decided to keep the glow on the font as it really makes the orange stand out. I didnt like the tint the 3d affect gave the logo so i got rid of that and i was left with a block orange font. i have decided to use this for my final magazine cover as it fits in to everything i want.

My magazine will appeal to the audience that are interested in the Back stage tour gossip and the new up and coming mainstream music artists. I feel there is not a market for this type of magazine as there is either a music based magazine or a gossip, personal lifes of the artists based magazine and i think this will appeal to many as theres nothing like this out there at this time. It will cover mainstream and popular artists and bands along with their personal lives and relevent gossip.
I aim to sell my magazine in most supermarkets and newsagents and other music orientated shops just as HMV. The magazine will be between the celebrity culture magazines and the music magazines as it contains both and is a mixture of the both styles. I want it to draw the attention of music magazine fans that also like to know about the bands social life and inside gossip about them. The price the magazine will be sold for will be £2.10 belive this price is perfect and a good balance as the price is very compettetive next to the other music magazine and the price is reasonable for those who are used to buying tabloid magazines. The paper quality wont be super glossy and expensive, just regular good printing colour paper that will still draw the attention of the reader. Ive chosen to do this as i want the front cover to be shiny and glossy to really stand out on the shelfs. The magazine will be a monthly issue and will also be a very compettetive price for the other monthly magazine issues avalible.
im going to call my magazine 'FRESH' i think this is a good name as fresh is asosiated with, new interesting exciting, first for gossip information. Fresh is a new and exciting name and will draw potential customers attention to the bright colours of the front cover. The magazine will be avalible to subscribe to on a monthly basis, and will be sent to the customers house via the post. This is good for sales as there is a regular influx of readers and profit coming in. subscribing also means that the magazine will be perchased no matter what each month. The magazine will also be avalible for download online, as downloading tabloid papers and other articles is becoming more and more popular as people with busy lifestyles can acsess the magzine on there portable devices, it can be perchased without even leaving there house.
What i have learnt
- i have learnt that most people i asked were more interested the gossip about the musicians private lifes rather than the actual music. So i will cover this the most along with there up and coming new music.
- Big bright photos of the artists are important and one of the main reasons people by the magazine is for the recent photos of the artists, so i will ensure that i have lots of large good photographs to go along side the articles.
- The music magazine industry appeals most to the 14-17 age group, so i will write in a way that, the 14-17 age group would most be able to relate to and enjoy.
- Most people would prefer to buy a music magazine monthly, so i will sell my magazine as monthly issue aswell as if i do this the sales are more likely to be higher.
- I learnt that most customers in the 14-17 age group would prefer to pay £2.50-£3.00 for a monthly music magazine so i decided to sell my magazine at £2.10, as i belive this is a very compettetive price and would appeal to the targeted age group as its far cheaper than other monthly music magazines.

This is a NME magazine cover, the target audience for NME is mid to late teens. On the front of this cover is a very famous artist called lilly allen. She is always in the public eye and often features on the front of tabloid papers and magazines, so the large photo of her on the cover will be very good for sales as she will appeal to a very large audience as shes so famous. She will appeal to both rock interested audience and people who arent into rock music. Her photo dominates whole whole cover with a mid long shot of her face, her head overlaps on top of the NME logo at the top, this shows the importance of the interview and gives the impression she is a domminant strong female. Her facial expression is plain and serious looking, this goes along with the rock/indie look that NME often portray. The plain white background matches her pale skin and gives her a gothic look. The main title that says 'LILY ALLEN TAKES ON THE WORLD' is in the style of cut out letters from a news paper, in a bold font surrounded by a black border, this gives it a emo messy look that matches what shes wearing and the facial expression shes pulling. Her red shirt is messy and lose this matches her style of her music and her lifestyle. The word choice of this shows shes very succsessfull and important so readers should read the issue and find out what shes doing and may indicate to the reader she has new plans for more music coming out.
The is a bright yellow circle pug in the bottom right hand corner, it has additional information about whats in the magazine, the information is expanded on the contense page. Across the top of the page is a bold black strip that says 'NEW MONKEYS TUNES' with a small photo of a member of the band, this is in a big bold yellow font and this will stand out to the potential byer as something else featured in the magazine and will perswade them to buy the magazine even more. The font used thoughtout the whole front cover is a bold straight font with flat lines, this gives the magazine a strong serious look and adds to masculinity of the magazine.
Double page spread-
This is the double page spread, the theme of the cut out messy style of the letters continues onto this page with the main title, giving it continuity this adds to the house style of the magazine so it can be easily recondised by the reader. The main title is slanted across the two pages in a wonky uneven look, this makes it look messy and stylish this links in with what lily is wearing. The quote they have used as the title has been cut out of what lily said to make it look more affective, this will attract the reader even more. the style of the page matches whats on the front cover showing clearly that this is the interview advertised on the front cover. The word choice of 'im just honest' engaes the reader and it sounds like the interview is aimed spesificly at them, its in a more chatty casual conforastion way rather than a formal interview.
There is a large photo of lily allen taking up the whole page, this again shows her dominance in this issue, shes leaning forward with her hands on her hips shows shes a strong female, this links in with the style of the title. Her serious expression may mean that the magazine is also serious about giving good music reviews to the customer. Her black hair stands out against the bright white background and matches the black and white font, this adds to the gruge rock look the magazine often potrays. The colloms are split into 4 small sections underneath the large title, this gives it a neat look.
The page numbers on the double page spread are small and in the bottom corners of the magzine, this doesnt ruin the look of the spread but at the same time effectively allows the reader to find what page they want. On the top right hand corner there is the NME website, this is good for the magazine as on every page it has this. This lets the reader know there is a website about the magazine, notifying fans they can view there site if they like the magazine.
Contents page
This is the contense page from the same issue, the porpous of the contense page is to show what else is on the magazine other than the main lily allen interview and it shows you what page number to find it on. The 'end of astoria' article was also mentioned on the front cover in a bright yellow pug this shows continuity, it wasn't covered as much as lily allen on the front cover so it explains more on the contense page, there is a large photo of the venue 'astoria' and this takes up most of the page this shows that this article is also very important and is a main feature.
Across the top of the contense page there is a large band that has the title 'NME THIS WEEK' this is obvious that this page will tell you what to expect in this issue, and throughout the page the colours red and black are used enthisising the house style as the title on the front page is in those colours aswell. on the far left side there is a list in a small red font of the other bands featured in this issue, this is used on every issue of NME and regular readers will look at this to see what else is featured. At the bottom of the page there is a large black box that stands out from the all white background giving additional information about a special offer saying that you will save money if you subscribe monthly to the magazine, this is effective becuase its in a large box with bold yellow and white fonts
On the right side of the page there is a long black strip that has the rest of the features and interviews in the magazine mentioned. They are in a small easy to read list that the reader can easily find as they are split up with bold black blocks with white titles in them seperating the 'interviews' from the 'reviews' etc, this helps the reader find spesificly what there looking for saving them from searching though the whole magazine.

This magazine is called NME, i have chosen to analyse two NME magazines as it was the most popular magazine that people chose in my questionnaire. The NME logo is the same in every issue, except if its a special addition or a themed issue the colour of the logo may then be changed to match that. This magazie is aimed at mid to late teens and aims to deliver a sophisticated and strong use of music and up and coming artists aswell as having a laid back fun feel that will appeal to the teen market.
The band on the front of the magazine is called The Wombats, they are a cool new english band with a indie style, this style will appeal to other teenagers who are more into the indie look and style of music other than the rock grunge style. You can tell the band are a more light hearted indie rock band by the style of the photo, they are very laid back and look like they are having fun. there facial expressions are diffrent and have a interesting style and this will stand out to potential customers. They are all doing diffrent posters, the hair pulling and the jumping arroudnd entiesises they are a fun and crazy band. There is no real focal artist and no obvious leader of the band, they are all in line with eachother athough the middle band member does give off the look of the leader.
In the centre of the page in big wonky letters is the band name 'THE WOMBATS' the colour uses are yelllow and white, this is a light fun and exciting colour that isnt serious and this matches the poses the band members are doing in the photo. This also shows the magazine NME has a vaired and a wide range of diffrent genres of music in its magazine, and this will appeal to a much wider audience instead of just featuring heavy rock bands. The sub title under the main title says 'why brittan's gone silly for the lords of the indie dance floor' the word choice of silly matches the silly poses the band members are pulling and carrys along the theme with the yellow colours and laid back feel of the front page.
On the far bottom left of the page there is a bright blue pug, giving additional information and other features the magazine has in it. The bright blue stands out and carrys on with the fun and exciting colour theme of the overall page, and this will draw the attention of potential customers who want to buy the magazine but may not be interetsed in The Wombats. The pug may perswade them to still buy the magazine as the content isnt all about The Wombats. Just above that is another pug advertising another interview with a diffrent band, it also has the same bright blue colours as the other pug. This will again appeal to people who are interetsed in diffrent bands and interviews.
At the very top of the magazine there is a bright yellow strip going across the whole length of the page, this strip has aditional information about a up and coming festival called Glastombry. The line up of the bands playing at this festival will be geatly anticipated so this big yellow band will draw the attention of readers who are planning to go. In block black capitals at the begining of the yellow strip is the word 'GLASTO' that is sland for Glastonbry, this shows the magazine is aimed at teenagers and they will understand the slang and makes the magazine look cool and down with what the teenagers would relate to.
Magazine analylasis Rocksound- front cover
This magazine is called Rocksound. The age range for this magazine is aimed at mid to late teens, this magazine is aimed to appeal to those who have a keen intrest in rock music and the culture that comes with it. It is more mature than kerrang and less mature than NME. The main title is across the top and in bold wrighting with a plain white font. this font is used in all their magazines but the colour of the font is often changed, if the issue is special addition or themed. The font they use is iconic to the magazine.
The band on the front cover is called Bring me the Horizon, they are a heavy metal rock band and are very popular with people who like the screamo style of music. The photo on the front cover keeps up with this rock image and have a violent hardcore appearance in the photo, they are holding things like, baseball bats and smashed bottles. This will appeal to the grunge fans and will intise audiences to buy the magazine. Their facial expressions are very screwed up, to give a violent and intense look, this is backed up buy the rock image the magazine uses. Their clothing is dark, and this contrasts with the dark grey background and will appeal to potential customers who like to dress in a similar way.
The cover doesn't say the bands name, this suggests their importance and how successful the band are and that the writers are assuming their readers will know who they are. Instead the cover says 'WE PREDICT A RIOT' this helps with the hardcore image and will appeal to mid late teens who like the band. The font of the main headline is like smashed glass, this connects with smashing things up and violence, and the expressions on the band members faces express this. Underneath that in a crooked wonky style it has other important bands that fans of Bring me the horizon might also like, and therefore persuade them to buy the magazine even more. The title is positioned arround the band members faces and merges well into the photo being carefull not to take the customers eye away from the actual band members. The magin title is also right next to the main band member, this will draw the potential customers eye to his face and the title first there fore making the use of that position very succsessfull.
On the far left side there is a list of other features in the magazine in a plain white font. This stands out against the dark background and suggests that its important as well. This gives the magazine a sophisticated look as well as a rock look.
